Children and Young People
Happier, Healthier Children
Many children and young people (CYP) have problems that affect how they feel, act, or learn. Therapy is a type of treatment for these problems. It is a way to get help for your child.
In therapy, CYP talk and learn how to work out their problems. Going to therapy helps them cope better, communicate better, and achieve more.
Therapists are trained to help kids and teens going through tough times like:
family problems
school problems
health problems
They help with feelings like:
sadness
anger
and worry
low
grief
Children and Young People need therapy when they have problems they can't cope with alone. Or they need help when problems affect how well they do, feel, or act. If things don't get better on their own, kids may need therapy so things can improve. Sometimes, entire families need support while trying to communicate, learn, and create boundaries.
In therapy, CYP learn by doing. With younger kids, this means working with the whole family, drawing, playing, and talking. For older kids and teens, therapists share activities and ideas that focus on learning the skills they need. They talk through feelings and solve problems.
I offer praise and support as they learn; and help them believe in themselves and find their strengths. Therapy builds helpful thinking patterns and healthy behavioural habits.
This therapy/support will be offered in collaboration with parents/carers. 3 initial assessment and planning sessions must be booked and paid for in advance, one with parents/carer, one with the child/YP and a final session where goals will be set and a plan for future support is agreed with both parents/carers and child/yp.
My career has focused on working predominantly with children and young people with severe mental health difficulties however due to safeguarding and additional risk complexities I will only offer therapy sessions for children and young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties.
If children and Young people do not hold capacity or have low motivation to engage then sessions can revert to adult only and will focus on supporting parents/carers.
Sunflower Project
Resilience, self-identity, self-esteem, sense of security and belonging programme for children
A programme of 4-6 sessions designed for children whom parents may feel are beginning to struggle. These 1:1 sessions help explore possible difficulties and offer a reflective space to help build confidence, resiliance and self-esteem.
Help your child have the ability to deal with stress, conflict, failure and challenges. Children with a sense of security, belonging, high levels of self-esteem and self-confidence are more resilient and are better able to cope with life as they get older.
Resilient children are more likely to take healthy risks because they are not afraid of failure. They are inquisitive and trust in their own ability to solve problems independently. Resilience helps children to deal with stressful situations, for example moving to a new school, taking tests, dealing with bullying, grief or separation of parents/carers.
Promoting resilience can be beneficial to children, allowing them to cope with new and challenging situations. As self-identity, self-esteem and self-confidence increase, children will develop their personal and social skills and become more independent. Resilience, self-identity, self-esteem and sense of security lead to children feeling positive about themselves. They will feel comfortable and will be able to experience a range of emotions without feeling overwhelmed.
Children with high levels of resilience normally have the following characteristics:
ability to show empathy with others
problem-solving skills
communication skills
ability to socialise with others
independence
ability to concentrate on school-work
sense of humour
high self-concept, self-esteem and self-confidence.
Forget- me- not : Bereavement and loss
Grief and loss therapy in Wrexham
Bereavement, grief and loss can cause many different symptoms and they affect people in different ways. There's no right or wrong way to feel.
As well as bereavement, there are other types of loss such as the end of a relationship or losing a job or home.
Some of the most common symptoms include:
shock and numbness – this is usually the first reaction to loss, and people often talk about "being in a daze"
overwhelming sadness, with lots of crying
tiredness or exhaustion
anger – towards the person you've lost or the reason for your loss
guilt – for example, guilt about feeling angry, about something you said or did not say, or not being able to stop your loved one dying
These feelings may not be there all the time and powerful feelings may appear unexpectedly.
It's not always easy to recognise when bereavement, grief or loss are the reason you're acting or feeling differently.
